Cinema Retro || IGIGI by Yuliya Raquel

Spring is merely a month and a half away and designers have started to release their Spring 2013 lookbooks.  IGIGI by Yuliya Raquel, one my favorite California based brands, is  transitioning into Spring with Cinema Retro; a collection rich in shapes and colors reminiscent of curvy screen beauties Sofia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. Inspired by the luscious and form-fitting styles of ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, designer Yuliya Raquel has created sensual silhouettes with a modern twist in retro prints, bright splashes of colors, and vivid hues. Cinema Retro includes fully lined dresses, separates, and bridal gowns with signature techniques to flatter the full-figured body.

“Cinema Retro is about glamour, sexiness, fierceness, sensuality and not
being afraid to express yourself as a confident chic woman. The collection
exhibits the classic IGIGI signature style of modern femininity with a vintage
vibe.” said Yuliya Raquel.

See here how I styled one of my IGIGI dresses. Which dress is your favorite from the Cinema Retro collection?

Emerald: Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year

Thanks to Pantone , we’re getting a little green next year, Emerald green to be exact. A couple weeks ago Pantone released their new Color of the Year and it’s a personal favorite of mine, Emerald.

Emerald is not only 2013 color of the year, but it also the birthstone for the month of May, which so happens to also be the month of my birthday. Could this be a sign that 2013 will be a good year for me? ;)

Like Tangerine Tango(2012′s color of the year), Emerald is a great color because it’s faltering on all skin tones and will encourage shoppers to wear a color they hadn’t thought of wearing before. What do you think of the 2013 color of the year? Do you plan on putting a little green in your wardrobe?

Holiday Gift Guides-$50 & Under

The holidays are officially here and I’m counting down the days until I’m eating my mom’s homemade tamales! I’m about halfway done with my holiday shopping, which for me is pretty good. I come from a large family, being one of six children. I have two brothers who both have wives, my three sisters and my mom; on top of nieces and nephews. We all know the holidays are not about how much money you spend, they’re about spending time with your loved ones and being happy for the little things (like you haven’t heard that before).

No matter if you come from a big family like me or you’re on a budget this year or both, there is no need to break the bank and stress yourself out on what to buy your loved ones.

This has been am amazing year for Glitter on the Ceiling and I’m so thankful for everyone who has stumbled upon my blog and have given it a read. I hope you have great holiday season and great things are to come in 2013!

Den.m Bar

Last weekend I had the privilege of visiting Den.m Bar in Downtown LA where they create and fit custom denim for their customers. The experience for customer starts when they walk into the bright space and choose the type of denim they want for their jeans. From there, they choose the cut and after that they chose the zippers, button and lining. When  Den.m Bar  says custom, they mean custom down to the T.

From start to finish it takes about two to three weeks for customers to get their pair of jeans. As far as pricing, they start at around $200 depending on the denim customer chooses. It was a fun experience and I hope to go back and get a pir of my own!

Leather patch that goes on back of the denim.

Pick a lining, any lining.

An adorable framed denim bow tie at @DenmBar in DTLA. Post from this trip will be up next week!

Finding the Perfect Red Lipstick

In antiquity, the color red was thought to be the first color perceived by man, it was thought to fight off evil. In the 18th century, it was a popular color to wear as a wedding gown. Currently, in some cultures it is still popular for a bride to wear a red veil to symbolize love and fertility.

An even more powerful statement is when a woman chooses to adorn red lips. Sexy comes in different skin tones and it’s important to find a red lipstick that suits the tone of your skin.

Warm Skin Tones/Olive Skin

If you have golden skin and your hair has a golden or reddish tone, a wine or a burgundy color would be best. Try this Korres plum color.

If you have dark hair and olive skin you can get away with those fire reds. I LOVE MAC’s Russian Red as well as NARS Jungle Red.

Cool Skin Tones/Light Skin

A cooler skin tone, which is rosy or olive skin, light eyes and darker hair should try a scarlet-blue red. A red lipstick with a blue undertone, like the Bare Escentuals Red Delicious.

If you’re a lighter completion a coral-red or orange-red would suit you best. Try Illamasqua in Flare.

Vegan Alternative

My newest red lipstick obsession has been Emani Cosmetics Promiscuous. It’s long lasting, amazing on ALL skin tones and is vegan and cruelty free.

What to do With the Rest of your Face

If you’re not sure what to apply to your cheeks and eyes when wearing a red lip, the best thing is to keep it simple. Black eyeliner, mascara and a neutral or plum cheek match well with red lips. If this is an evening affair, a smokey eye complement red lips very well.

The clocking is ticking and you still don’t know what to wear on February 14. Do not stress mon amie! This weekend is plenty of time to find a cute ensemble to wear to dinner, the park, the movies, whatever your Valentine’s day may have in store. Choose comfort over style and nothing looks better on you than a smile and your loved ones arms wrapped around your body. Happy Valentine’s day!

Although I know Adobe’s InDesign, I was curious to see how Polyvore’s Set application worked. I must say I’m impressed how easy it is to create these things! This is my first one, it was a lot of fun, but I might keep it the basics and use InDesign.

Top 4 Fashion Documentaries

Anyone who knows me well is aware of my obsession with fashion, but also, that I’m a huge movie buff. I have a soft spot for documentaries since there are no actors or special effects, they are real people, living real lives in real day situations. What’s even better than a good documentary, is a documentary about the fashion industry. Eye-candy galore and a behind the scenes look of  goes on in a world driven by fabrics, zippers, imagination and beautiful people.

Fashion documentaries allow people to witness it’s not all about beautiful clothes and breathtaking models (although it can be), it’s a world of high stress. For 90 minutes viewers see how much time, hard work, sweat and tears go into a magazine or a fashion show, even a clothing line.

Here are my top 4: (In no particular order)

1. Valentine: The Last Emperor

An intimate look into the everyday life of one of the most famous fashion designers in the world, this documentary is eye candy in every way, from the dazzling couture dresses in Valentino’s atelier and his enormous to gorgeously decorated homes around Europe.

Valentino comes across as charming, creative in the unexpected moments and a little corky. From parties at his home to working on dress designs and planning fashion shows, Valentino’s life is filled with beauty, which he tries to bestow upon every woman he dresses.

2. Unzipped

Unzipped gives a day-by-day insight at fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi as he plans his 1994 spring fashion show. The film starts with him sketching and drawing and by the end you see it all come together for his breathtaking show. Mizrahi is beyond charming and sticks to his New York roots and through all his fame remains humble and himself.

Seeing super models in the 90′s like Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell make the documentary nostalgic and glamourous. Most of the film is in black and white, which may seem odd for a documentary about a fashion designer and his line where color thrives, but it works. There are pops of color in some parts and when used it made that scene beyond captivating.

3. The September Issue

When the film starts with Anna Wintour delivering one of the most engaging monologues about the fashion industry ever been uttered, you know this documentary is going to blow your mind.

This critically acclaimed documentary shows the creation of the September 2007 issue of Vogue, and details all the work by all of the editors that goes into it. Filled with witty quotes, amazing cameos and even more amazing clothing. It gives viewers an inside look at what it takes to put a fashion magazine together, especially one as big as Vogue. How it takes months of endless editing, re-editing and photo shoots to finally see the magazine come together.

4. Seamless

This documentary gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at three young designers as they vie to win the Vogue and Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) prize, of both money and a mentor, to help them grow their businesses.
